When we as B<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">lack<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> men talk to a <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> person<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> about <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span> <span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">privilege<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">, we often highlight the fact that although they may not be a racist, they still benefit from a historical system of <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> supremacy<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> that oppresses B<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">lack<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> people and deems <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> people superior to B<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">lack<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">It is not uncommon for white people to launch a rebuttal, denying that <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">racism<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> exists and that they are privileged by being <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">. Sometimes they become angry and defensive. They may even say that Black peoples struggle is their own fault and that if B<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">lack<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> people focused on building their families, they would experience fewer hardships. No, not just\u00a0<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">\u00a0men. Most men. Yes, black<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">\u00a0men too. Many of us say or act as if\u00a0<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">black<\/span>\u00a0<span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">male<\/span>\u00a0<span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">privilege<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> does not exist. Even if black male privilege does not look identical to privileges afforded to a <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">white<\/span>\u00a0<span data-slate-leaf=\"true\">male<\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\" data-slate-fragment=\"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\">, it does not mean that the injustices that women are experiencing because of their gender are fictitious, being imagined in their heads, or misrepresented.<\/span><\/p><p data-slate-node=\"element\" data-slate-fragment=\"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\"><span data-slate-node=\"text\">Black women and other women of color have a particularly difficult challenge. On on hand they are being judged by white people because of their skin color. The death of the Black women listed above \u2014 others \u2014 have not triggered the same level of global outrage against police brutality as their Black male counterparts by law enforcement. <\/span><\/p><p data-slate-node=\"element\" data-slate-fragment=\"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\"><span data-slate-node=\"text\">This is not because the death of those women were not captured on video. Take for example, in 2015, a video of 37-year-old Natasha McKenna, who was tasered to death in jail while she was experiencing a mental health crisis was distributed to media outlets. However, little attention was given to her horrific death. Unfortunately, racist violence toward Black women have historically been erased, incomplete or ignored.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa678e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aa678e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sexual harassment and Sexual Assault<\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6bf7c24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6bf7c24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As Black men (and men more generally) we are not nervous when walking past a group of women. If we are nervous, it is often not because we feel like our lives are in danger. On the other hand, Black women are frightened when walking past a group of men. The fact that 1 in 5 Black women will be savagely raped during their lifetime suggests that they should be.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c55ceb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3c55ceb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Just Being a Man vs. Being a Bi*ch<\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ccaaad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ccaaad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"><span class=\"getHighlights__Term-sc-1s71y2o-0 bOHVYF highlight--related-topic\">Black<\/span><\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"> men can be angry, aggressive, firm, picky, pushy, rude, or vulgar without fear of much judgement. It is considered acceptable for a Black man to be that way because they are a man. However, if <\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"><span class=\"getHighlights__Term-sc-1s71y2o-0 iOyhdl highlight--variant\">a Black <\/span><\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\"><span class=\"getHighlights__Term-sc-1s71y2o-0 iOyhdl highlight--variant\"><span class=\"getHighlights__Term-sc-1s71y2o-0 bOHVYF highlight--related-topic\">woman<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-slate-leaf=\"true\" data-slate-fragment=\"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\"> possesses the same characteristics, she is described using many disrespectful words such as, angry, bougie, catty, messy and slut. Such behavior is even described as being unwomanly. At the same time, when women express emotions they are described as overemotional, too sensative and drama queen.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3e5d33 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d3e5d33\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><p data-slate-node=\"element\" data-slate-fragment=\"JTVCJTdCJTIyY2hpbGRyZW4lMjIlM0ElNUIlN0IlMjJ0ZXh0JTIyJTNBJTIyV29ya3BsYWNlJTIwR2xhc3MlMjBDZWlsaW5nJTIyJTdEJTVEJTJDJTIydHlwZSUyMiUzQSUyMnBhcmFncmFwaCUyMiU3RCUyQyU3QiUyMmNoaWxkcmVuJTIyJTNBJTVCJTdCJTIydGV4dCUyMiUzQSUyMiUyMiU3RCU1RCUyQyUyMnR5cGUlMjIlM0ElMjJwYXJhZ3JhcGglMjIlN0QlNUQ=\"><span data-slate-node=\"text\">Workplace Glass Ceiling<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.3em; font-weight: 700;\"><\/span><\/p><\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43d0190 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43d0190\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>More than any other group, Black women deal with gender stereotypes and gender discrimination in the workplace. For example, despite having the same level of education, women are often paid less for the same position as their male counterparts. Women with children are often forced to abandon their career ambitions and choose a job that is convenient for the family.<\/p><p>If that was not bad enough, women also experience harrassment at the workplace.\u00a0 Out of fear, very few women report incidents immediately, if ever.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a7c594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7a7c594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Can Black Men Do to help?\u00a0<\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49c697a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49c697a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you still do not believe that male privilege is a real thing, I cannot help you. You have some foundational issues that are beyond the scope of this post. For those of you who see a little clearer some of the negative affects of male privilege the rest of this post is for you.<\/p><p>If we as Black men \u2014 sons, brothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers \u2014 love our mothers, sisters, aunts, wives or some other woman in our lives, the least we can do is recognize our position of privilege when compared to Black women. Regardless of whether we want to talk about or look at particular affordances our privilege provides us, we must at least recognize that we do have privileges, many of which Black women do not have.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">If we do not acknowledge the privileges of being a Black man as compared to a Black woman, then we are just like the white people that do not acknowledge their position of privilege when compared to us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an African American (Black) man, I am familiar with conversations about white privilege.
